Hi, Friends!
I’m coming off of a bad illness this weekend, and I’m still not at 100%. But I wanted to make sure I shared something with you for Musical Theatre Monday—but forgive me if I’m a bit short today.
So, I spent most of the early 2010s on Tumblr. If you were familiar with that side corner of the internet, you know that there were three fandoms in particular that dominated discourse. They even had a fancy Franken-name: Superwholock.
Of course, that’s
Supernatural
Doctor Who
Sherlock (BBC)
No matter what the post was about, it could be relied upon that someone from one of those fandoms would take over and twist a post to their own nefarious ends.
I was late in falling in love with Supernatural—I didn’t watch it until well after my tumblr days. It probably happened when I was sick and looking for something to binge watch.
And what a trip it was. I can see why it has its devoted fans. But my favorite episode of the whole show has to be Fan Fiction. It is deliciously meta, and a beautiful tribute to all of the fans who supported the show.
I’m not going to dig too deeply into the minutiae of what’s going on in this episode. All you need to know is that Sam and Dean are hunters, chasing down a monster of the week. This week’s monster is pestering a girls’ school that is putting on a musical adaptation of, essentially, Sam and Dean’s life and journey.
of particular note, is the gorgeously-staged exorcism using the Latin rite. Stunning and haunting. Not to mention the glorious recapitulation of the show’s theme song at the end.
