Hello friends! Sorry for being a day late.
I’m also sorry that this is turning into a musical theatre blog. But the truth of the matter is, when I’m deep in the writing cave, everything goes into the writing. And it’s only later that I’m able to come back and share things and reflect on it.
It’s a weird process, but it’s how I’ve always been. But I hope I’ll be back with some exciting views into The Queen’s Peculiars and other stories that I’ve been kicking around. I will say that during the last Ninja Writers 3-hour plotting session, I was able to do a rough outline for a new book that I’m excited for.
But more on that later. Mustn’t let the cat out of the bag yet!
Anyway. Today’s number is the perfect one to sum up the writing process and life in general. From the musical The Drowsy Chaperone it’s called “As We Stumble Along.”
This show is, quite frankly, hilarious. It’s a musical within a musical, and does a really good job of poking fun at some of the golden-age themes and motifs in theatre.
Anyway, this song is sung by the titular character, the drowsy chaperone. (Keep in mind, during prohibition in the 1920s, drowsy was an euphemism for something else entirely. You might be able to guess what from the video.)
Watch until the end. Beath Leavel (who originated the role on Broadway), has a surprise for you!
As we stumble along
'Cross life's crowded dance floors
As we push and we shove
We live and we learnAnd when we fin'lly leave the bar
And we see that morning star
We pull our boot straps up and homeward turn
I got to see this show live, a production by 42nd Street Moon in SF that does lesser known musicals. A good friend was the chaperone and it was fun to hear her take on the production.. she had a great time with it! Amy Meyers is her name. She was also the lead in a local production of Mama Mia, playing Donna. amazing!!!!
